Dr. G. VISWANATHAN (GV)

Dr. GV, the founder-chancellor of VIT University, was born on December 8, 1938 in a remote village near Vellore in Tamil Nadu. Dr. GV’s life is a source of inspiration to the modern-day youth.

Dr. GV − the Student

Dr. GV completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 2003, nearly four decades after his University education, reaffirming his urge to be an eternal student. He excelled in academics right through childhood. His early education was confined to his small village where he studied in his mother tongue, Tamil. His pre university education at Voorhees College, Vellore, initiated him to the world outside. From there he went on to obtain his bachelors and Masters Degrees in Economics from the prestigious Loyola College, Chennai. Following this, he graduated in Law from the Madras Law College.

Dr. GV − the leader of the people

A student leader in his twenties entering Indian parliament was something unthinkable, especially in 1960s. He championed people’s issues in the parliament and they, in turn, reposed faith in the leader who fulfilled their expectations. They re-elected him by a bigger margin in the next election for another five-year term. He travelled to different parts of the world as a member of parliamentary delegations and appreciated issues in a global perspective. Dr. GV wanted to play a bigger role in the provincial politics so that he can make a direct contribution in bettering the lives of the people in the region. He was elected to Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for ten years. During this period, he served as a Minister for two years.

Dr. GV − the educator

Dr.GV founded Vellore Engineering College in 1984 at Vellore. He envisaged that this institution would offer world-class education to students who would in turn create an indelible impact on the society. The engineering college that started with an intake of 180 students in 1984 has evolved as a university with two campuses. Over 25,000 students are enrolled in 53 undergraduate and graduate programs with nearly 16,000 residing on the campus. It attracts students and professors from different parts of the world. It houses more than 1000 international students on campus. For the past two years, VIT University has been ranked #1 private engineering institution in India. ISO Certification from Holland, International accreditation from the United Kingdom and the USA, and the highest accreditation grade from the Government of India reflect the University’s penchant for excellence on all fronts.

Dr. GV’s passion for societal development and compassion for the underprivileged have resulted in the introduction of several schemes for uplifting the women and unemployed youth in the region to help them become self-reliant. Dr. GV offers scholarships to students from disadvantaged sections of the society to enable them to pursue higher studies. Dr.GV has established the Universal Higher Education Trust to create opportunities for higher education to every deserving student in the region. He has adopted several villages in an effort to improve the quality of lives of the rural people. His vision of transforming Vellore into a greener and cooler town by planting one million saplings has begun to yield fruit. Dr.GV’s farsightedness extends beyond horizons.

Dear Students and Colleagues,
We have come a long way since 1984. It's the people who have made VIT an amazing university. We are proud that we are recognized as the No. 1 Private engineering institution in the country. But we have yet a long way to go - dreams to fulfill, heights to reach and responsibilities to carry out.

Knowledge is only as powerful as the application of it, and as useful as the care that goes into the application. Let's put wisdom in education by combining knowledge with application, compassion and insight. Some of you will be engineers who will solve the most critical problems; scientists who will invent; business leaders who'll generate wealth and employment for the society and teachers who'll create tomorrow's engineers, scientists and business leaders. But we aspire that ALL of you will be the most caring, wise and determined human beings.

I dare you to dream, to work smart and strive for nothing less than excellence. And implore you to enjoy the journey every step of the way. Believe in yourself, your mentors, peers and partners. Don't compromise on ethics and your beliefs.

As we conclude the 25th anniversary celebrations, let's remember the challenges, the hard-work, good and bad times, learnings, wins and joys. Let's celebrate our accomplishments as we set out to achieve bigger and better things for the next 25 years.

Since its inception, VEC has made commendable progress overcoming hurdles with commitment and passion. It is heartening to record the achievements, VIT has achieved in its short span of 29 years. The vision and dream of our Chancellor is to cater to the needs of the rural communities by providing opportunities to students coming from backward areas, which VIT is doing to a greater extent by giving scholarships, organizing out reach programmes and adopting schools in the near by rural areas.

I am proud to quote that we have excellent faculty members, quality students not only from all parts of India but all over the globe. The University has built up an excellent infrastructure over the years. We strive hard to put VIT in the global educational arena.

VICE CHANCELLOR

Prof. Raju, represents VIT faculty's commitment to and dedication for preparing the graduates for challenges in science, engineering, technology, management and the society. He also represents the university's collective commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, research and service. He is a strong proponent of an educational process that nurtures creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship while providing the students with strong fundamentals.

Prof. Raju comes to VIT from the State University of New York, where he has been a Professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Dean of the School of Engineering Technologies and the Director of Science and Technology Programs. In the past, he was associated with the Rochester Institute of Technology as a Professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Technologies and the Chair of the Manufacturing Engineering Technology Department; he was a Professor of Manufacturing Technology and the Director of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Studies at the Purdue School of Engineering, Indiana University - Purdue University; and the Director of the Division of Engineering Sciences and Technology at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Prof. Raju's teaching and research interests are in manufacturing technologies, electronics manufacturing, engineering education, technology policy and management. As part of his research involvement, he has worked as a Visiting Professor at the Carnegie Mellon University and as a Research Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was also a member of the US Team working on the Implementation of Computer Integrated Manufacturing at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, Vienna, Austria. He was a Professor of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at the University Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia.

Prof. Raju is a senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and is the past Chair of its Manufacturing Education and Research Community. He is also a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and the past Chair of its Manufacturing Engineering Division. As a representative of SME, he has been associated with the international accrediting agency ABET Inc., ( used to be known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ). In the past, he has served as a Commissioner of the Technology Accreditation Commission and the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Apart from his academic work, Prof. Raju has worked as an engineer, manager or a consultant in industry and government. His association with industry was through the Eastman Kodak Company, General Motors, Voplex Corporation, Raymond Corporation and the Reynolds Aluminum Company. His involvement with the government included engineering projects at the US Defense Logistics Agency and the Indian Railways.

Prof. Raju is a graduate of the Indian and US universities with degrees in Physics, Electronics, Industrial Engineering and Management.

Prof. S. Narayanan received his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Masters and Doctorate in Industrial Engineering and Management from Pondicherry University. With nearly 27 years of teaching experience and 2 years of industrial experience, he has contributed more than 90 research papers in various reputed International, National Journals and conferences. His areas of interest include Industrial Engineering and Management, Manufacturing etc., Eight Scholars have been awarded Ph.D under his guidance and he has provided guidance for more than 20 M.Tech student projects. He is currently guiding 6 Ph.D scholars.

He has delivered many Invited Talks and Guest Lectures at National and International level and has authored three books. With the keen interest to promote and develop research, he has organized many International and National Conferences like 22nd CARS & FOF, 21st AIMTDR, GCMM, and ICAMB 2009 and various Workshops, Seminars etc., He has received many awards and honors for his visionary service which include "Cognizant - VIT Best faculty award", "VIT's Best HOD award" etc.,

With his rich academic and industrial experience, he has been instrumental in executing more than 10 Sponsored Research and consultancy projects funded by various funding agencies like DST, DRDL and EU - Asian Link Programme. He is also the Co-ordinator for FIST- DST project and Co - coordinator for TIFAC Core established in VIT University, funded by Department of Science and Technology.

He played a key role in the following accreditation processes: National Board of Accreditation (NBA), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Energy Institute ( EI), UK and ABET, USA. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and member in various professional societies like ASME, ISTE and IIPE.

Kadhambari S. Viswanathan,

Education

Kadhambari completed school education at Vellore, and obtained her B.Tech (Biotechnology) from VIT University in 2010. In 2007, she registered at the Summer School in Johns Hopkins University, USA, and utilized the opportunity to compare the curriculum of Johns Hopkins with that of Indian Universities. Her stint at Johns Hopkins provided her with an excellent opportunity to interact with students from various countries and with faculty members of high academic caliber. In 2009, she pursued her summer internship in one of the best Cancer Research institutes in Europe, the DKFZ., Heidelberg, Germany. This visit exposed her to cutting edge research and developmental techniques in the field.

After graduation in Biotechnology from VIT University, Kadhambari joined the prestigious Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA for Masters in Health Sciences.

On completion of her Masters degree in May 2011, she returned to India and registered for Ph.D in VIT University to pursue research in Higher Education Leadership. As part of her doctoral research, she spent one month at University of Malaya, Malaysia to make a comparative study of higher education.

Extracurricular Achievements
At an early age of twelve, Kadhambari authored the biography of her grand father and Chancellor of VIT University, Dr.G.Viswanathan, titled “My Granpa” . She has been honoured by the Limca Book of Records as the youngest biographer in India. She had the privilege of personally interacting with Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Dr.R.Venktaraman the former Presidents of India, the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the President of Rwanda, Dr.Paul Kagame. These interactions have motivated her to march forward to achieve bigger and better goals in life.

She started her foreign travel at a tender age 9 to participate in Education Exhibitions and Seminars in Asia, Africa and Europe. She has travelled widely, and has so far visited 26 counties in all the five continents.
